The reports measure how well fifth grade students can read and do mathematics in each of the schools in Western Pennsylvania based on Pennsylvania System of School Assessment (PSSA) results. The report provides parents and citizens with easy-to-understand information in order to encourage improvement in student proficiency. In 2000, the Conference established a visionary goal - that every 10 year old in the region should be proficient in reading, writing, and mathematics by the year 2010. To attract new jobs and residents to Western Pennsylvania, the region's schools must ensure that every child enters the workforce proficient in basic skills.
